A Head Full of Hair: Hollywood’s Fight against Balding

Hair loss can be a nightmare for actors. In the youth-obsessed movie industry, thinning hair could affect their chances of being cast for a role. In fact, in a 2011 interview Chris Evans of Captain America, spoke candidly about losing his hair. The star hopes that male pattern baldness would not affect his role as a superhero in the upcoming Marvel movie sequels.

Early detection is the key to treating male pattern baldness these days. With the increasing accessibility of FUT hair transplant procedures, it is easier for celebrities to maintain a head full of hair. Others are even resorting to more drastic methods, such as scalp tattoo and robotic hair restorations.

Robotic Hair Restoration

Last year, the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplantation System arrived in Birmingham, helping men with male pattern baldness get their hair back. The robot uses AI algorithms to identify quality areas of hair to transplant to the scalp. Since a robot performs the follicular extraction, it has more precision than a surgeon and, in turn, results in a faster recovery time.

The X Factor star Lloyd Daniels recently underwent the procedure.

Scalp Tattoos

Scalp micropigmentation, or medical hairline tattoos, is a non-invasive treatment. It utilises micro-needles to set pigment into the scalp. Similar to traditional tattooing, the procedure creates the appearance of tiny hair follicles to recreate the look of fuller hair. The effects of the procedure usually last for three to seven years.

Some public figures with scalp tattoos include Quinton Fortune, Benedict Garett and Daniel Johnson.

A Vampire Facelift for Hair

Kim Kardashian made headlines after popularising the vampire facial in 2013 — a procedure that involves drawing the patient’s blood and injecting it into the face to enhance their appearance. The procedure was so effective, in fact, that cosmetic doctors are using the same technique on patient hair to stimulate growth. Called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, the procedure can stimulate dormant hair follicles and restore a person’s healthy mane.

Treatments against balding are extensive. As the options for treating male pattern baldness expands, there is hope in encouraging others with receding hairlines to restore their beloved locks.
